Az- Zawiyya (Arabic الزاوية, DMG az- Zawiya or az- Zawiyat al - Gharbiya / الزاوية الغربية; Italian Ez Zauia ), also al - Sawija or simply Az Zawiyah, a city in northwestern Libya on the Mediterranean coast, about 50 km west of Tripoli away. It is also the capital of az- Zawiya Munizips.

History

In 1988, the Seventh of April University was founded in the city.

During the civil war in Libya as of February 17, 2011 Az Zawiyah was one of the centers of the uprising in the west of the country and the westernmost city in the hands of the rebels. It was then the scene of fierce battles and recaptured after two weeks on 10 March by government forces. In the taking of the city troops of the elite Khamis Brigade should have been involved, which began in tanks and armored personnel carriers.
