Zawoja

Zawoja is a village in southern Poland near Maków Podhalański. It is located in the powiat Suski ( county ), situated in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. Together with the neighboring village Skawica it is the rural community Zawoja. Zawoja has 6200 inhabitants (2001) and is often referred to as one of the biggest Polish villages. This statement is based on the considerable length of 20 kilometers, the village along a valley runs.

Zawoja located in the proximity to the mountain massif Babia Góra ( 1725 m) and is also the seat of the National Park Babia Gora. Since the 19th century Zawoja is one of the most important winter sports resorts in Poland. Zawoja is also famous for its wooden architecture and folk art of the highlanders of Babia Góra.

On April 2, 1969, over occupied Antonov An-24 LOT crashed on the mountain Polica Zawoja. 2009, a monument was erected at the crash site.
