Saporisky Awtomobilebudiwny Zavod ( ЗАЗ in transcription ZAZ, formerly SAS, Saporischjaer automotive factory, Ukrainian Запорізький автомобілебудівний завод, Russian Запорожский автомобилестроительный завод, Saporoschski awtomobilestroitelny zavod ) is a traditional Ukrainian automobile manufacturer in the city of Zaporizhia. In the GDR vehicles manufacturer from 1967 to 1979 have been delivered under the name Saporoshez. All models had an air-cooled four-stroke V4 engine in the rear. Today, the Group takes over license productions for Mercedes -Benz, Opel, Chevrolet and Daewoo in particular. In addition to cars among other things, container or garden chairs are manufactured.

History

The Russia German Abram J. Koop founded in 1863 from four smaller factories, a company that specializes in the production of agricultural machinery and equipment. In 1921 the company was re- established after the Russian Revolution and the subsequent Civil War under the name " Communards ". In 1929 the first of 129 724 threshing machines was built, which were produced from 1930 to 1941 and from 1947 to 1952 in series.

On 18 June 1959, the company presented its first draft of a passenger car, the Saporoshez SAS 965, as study, which followed a year later in series and was from 1965 exported in several Eastern and Western European countries. Brand names in western countries are Yalta ( Yalta ) and ZAZ, in Austria Eliette. 1966 was the SAS 966 as the successor of SAS 965 in production. He was presented as a prototype in 1961. In 1976, the one millionth car, a SAS 968A, delivered. 1979 began series production of the SAS 968M, within three years of its production could be increased to 600 units per day.

In 1987, the company began series production of its first front-wheel drive car with a water-cooled engine, the ZAZ -1102 Tavria; the previous models all had a rear wheel drive. In 1989, the three millionth passenger cars was built.

On 30 June 1994, the production of SAS 968M was adjusted with a celebration. From 1960 to 1994 a total of 3,422,444 cars with air-cooled rear engine from the engine factory Melitopol ( MeMZ ) have been prepared in Zaporizhia. It now concentrated on the production of Tavria.

In the spring of 1998, the Company entered into the Ukrainian- Korean joint venture AvtoZAZ - Daewoo. In addition to a modernized version of the ZAZ -1102 Tavria the Daewoo Lanos models, Nubira and Leganza have been built from now on. 1999 began series production of the ZAZ -1103 Slavuta.

2002, licensed production of vehicles of the Mercedes E-Class and ML-Class was recorded in January 2003 was followed by the licensed production of Opel Astra, Vectra and Corsa cars. In 2003 began the production of VAZ motor vehicles. In 2004 the production of the models pick -up and Sens, partly absorbed by natural gas.
