Twelve Tribes of Israel
- Josef Manasseh
Zebulun (also Zebulon, Hebrew זבולון ) is the tenth son of Jacob in the Bible ( cf. Gen. 35.23 EU). His mother was Leah, the first wife of Jacob. He was the youngest of her six sons, while his other half-brothers from other mothers had ( cf. Gen 29.31 EU - 30.24 ).
The tribe of Zebulun
After him also named one of the twelve tribes of the Hebrews in the early days of the Jewish people, which attributed its origin to the patriarchs. According to the statement, " they will gain the wealth of the sea" in the blessings of Moses (Deut 33,19 EU ) would be suspect that the tribe had settled on the coast, which, however, with the description of the tribal area in the book of Joshua are not in accordance to bring (cf. Jos 19.10 to 16 EU). In the book of Judges it is said that Zebulun would not have taken in the context of the alleged conquest of Canaan the places Kitron Nahalol, but the Canaanites would have only made tributaries.
With the conquest of the northern kingdom of Israel by the Assyrians in 733 BC, Zebulun went under. However, the tribal area was familiar to New Testament times, so it could be used as locator contained also the evangelist Matthew. For the evangelist, with the ministry of Jesus in this landscape the prophetic announcement in Isa 8.23 to 9.1 EU fulfilled ("the people that walked in darkness have seen a great light ").
