Zeger Bernhard van Espen

Zeger Bernhard van Espen ( born July 9, 1646 Leuven, † October 2, 1728 in Amersfoort ) was a Dutch church lawyer.

Life

After studying theology and canon law at Louvain van Espen received priestly ordination in 1673. In 1675 he became professor of canon law at Louvain.

In the so-called Jansenistenstreit van Espen supported the cause of the alleged Jansenists, as was his work Jus ecclesiasticum universe 1704 on the Index Librorum prohibitorum.

After the cathedral chapter had not been recognized in the bull Unigenitus Utrecht (1713 ) and 1723 against the resistance of the Roman Curia Cornelius Steenoven elected archbishop and was consecrated by Dominique Marie Varlet, he defended in a report the legality of election and ordination. For this reason he was suspended from his teaching post. After he was asked by the Archbishop of Mechelen to revoke, he fled via Maastricht to Amersfoort and joined there the Katholieke Kerk van de Roomsch Oud- Bisschoppelijke Cleresie to. His entire works were banned in 1734, what their appreciation but not impaired.

Van Espen was considered one of the most influential representatives of the Episcopalian.
