Žehra

Žehra ( Schigra German, Hungarian Zsigra - to 1902 Zsegra ) is a village in the Spis region ( Spis ) in Slovakia.

Location

The place is located in the east of Slovakia about 17 kilometers from Levoča and 5 kilometers from the Spis Castle. In addition to the main town Žehra to place belongs also to the north-west hamlet on Hodkovce (1877 amalgamated; German Hotze village).

History and Sights

The town was first mentioned in 1245 as Sygura. The Romanesque Church of the Holy Spirit from the year 1275 is one because of her Gothic frescoes ( between the 13th and 15th centuries created ) a UNESCO World Heritage Site ( since 1993). After a fire in the 15th century it was a Gothic vault which is carried palm-like by a central pillar.

The oldest murals are the so-called Konsekrationskreuze ( consecration crosses) from the year 1275th In the tympanum of the south portal there is a Calvary - representation, also from the 13th century. From the 14th century, a representation of the Trinity comes as a three- head. The images were probably drowned as a result of a plague epidemic 1644/45 and exposed again in the 20th century.

In place Hodkovce is surrounded by a large French Park, a baroque castle of the Counts Csáky from the year 1703.
