Zembra

Zembra (Arabic زمبرة, Zimbra DMG ) is an island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of Tunisia. Together with the 4.8 km east-southeast and located only two acres of neighboring island Zembretta (Arabic الجامور الصغير ) includes the islands administratively to the province Nabeul. By 1976, the islands were used as a natural fortress by the Tunisian army, since January 1977 both islands constitute a biosphere reserve since April 1977 and a Tunisian National Park.

Geography

Zembra located 11 kilometers north-west off the Tunisian west coast at Cap Bon, about 60 kilometers from Tunis. The steep and rugged island has an area of ​​about 4 square kilometers and reaches a height of 435 meters above the sea. The nearby fishing village of Sidi Daoud, you can reach the two Zembra and Zembretta by boat.

Flora and Fauna

The vegetation is dominated by olive trees, wild pistachios, Western arbutus, Vielblütiger Heath, Phoenician juniper and broom. Rats, rabbits, feral cats and European mouflon sheep were brought by people on the island. Zembra lies on the migration route from Sicily to Africa and serves as migratory birds resting and feeding area. In the waters around the island are seen frequently dolphins.
