Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen

Opened in 1996 Zeppelin Museum is located in Friedrichshafen, Baden- Württemberg. It is housed in the former harbor station with its clear Bauhaus architecture directly on Lake Constance. The museum houses the largest collection on the history and technology of the Zeppelin airships.

Museum concept

The museum is designed under the dual context of " art and technology ". It allows to get to know these two issues together and experience.

The Zeppelin collection

The museum has in its exhibition on the ground floor and the 1st floor to about 4,000 m², the entire history of the Zeppelin airships to the present day. Using a variety of original exhibits the development of airship technology, but also the importance of the airship for civilian and military aviation is illustrated.

Ground floor

On the ground floor the history of the LZ 129, better known issued under the name "Hindenburg" with numerous exhibits since 2012. This also includes a Maybach car that illustrates the time history of the early 30s and the links of Count Zeppelin and Maybach companies. Previously, the development of air Zeppelin GmbH and its impact operations was conveyed in these rooms. In August 2007, a special exhibition of current models and the technique of the Zeppelin NT was seen.

LZ 129 "Hindenburg"

The central and largest object is a walk-in replica of the 33-meter -long section of the airship LZ 129 "Hindenburg" from 1936, with passenger cabins, lounge and writing room.

Technical exhibits

After leaving the segment of the Hindenburg on the 1st floor motors and the aluminum construction of the Zeppelin must be considered.

Civilian and military use

In a wing of the 1st floor civilian, second in a wing is represented the military use. This area was completely redesigned in 2013 and now shows under the heading " lift, propulsion, aerodynamics - giants in motion " the physical aspects of aeronautics. Numerous interactive stations offer young and older visitors the opportunity to try out these relationships and thus better understand them.

The Art Collection

In 1944 the Lake Museum was destroyed in an air raid. In the 2nd floor of the Zeppelin Museum works of this art collection is presented from the Middle Ages to the present. Technology and art are located not only under one roof but also be connected to each other in content.

The focus is on the art of the 20th century. The collection includes works by Otto Dix, Max Ackermann, Karl Caspar, Maria Caspar- Filser, Res Ingold and Thom Barth.

Among other things, works from the Lake Constance region are exhibited. Historically noteworthy are the pictures of Old Lake Views:

  • Franz Seraph forehead fire: Arrival of the paddle steamer " Crown Prince " in the port of Friedrichshafen around 1840.
  • The artist was Meersburg around 1935 ( the port with simple pier in ashlar ).
  • Otto Dix: Landscape with Rainbow 1933 (View over the submarine on the tower of the cathedral of Constance ).

Since April 19, 2013, the art collection is re- presented under the two themes " man and technology " and "Man and Nature ".

Archive and Library

According to the concept of " technology and art " to connect the archives and the library to a research on the topics of aerospace, aeronautics, art and art history. The history of airships as well as company and personal history of the Zeppelin airships occupies a large part of the library. The book collections and documents are housed here centrally and are available for research of all kinds.

Museum Shop and Restaurant Port

The ground floor of the museum shop is with literature, photographs and souvenirs Zeppelin.

From the 1st floor of the museum and outside the harbor restaurant is accessible. It is still in the same place as before in the historic harbor station.

Friends

The Circle of Friends to promote the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen was founded in 1983 and has 1,600 members and friends all over the world. He was involved in the financing of the museum and stops at the Zeppelin Museum GmbH 30%. He acquires new exhibits and prints them on loan to the museum.
