Żerań Power Station

The CHP Żerań is one of the largest thermal power stations in Poland. It is Białołęka, the northernmost district of Warsaw, and after the power plant in the south Siekierki the second largest power plant in the Polish capital. The plant is located on the right bank of the Vistula River, which supplies cooling water.

The construction was started Żerańs 1952, and four years later, the power plant went on line. After upgrading from 1991 to 1997, it today has an electrical output of 350 MW and a thermal capacity of 1560 MW. Generates both electricity and district heating Żerań, then, is a combined heat and power plant. Warsaw has one of the largest district heating networks in the world and ahead of Berlin, the longest network in Central Europe.

The power plant Żerań is fired with coal and is located on the same port built Żerań. It is part of Vattenfall Heat Poland SA, a subsidiary of Swedish energy company Vattenfall.

Since a few years Biomass is co by law to a limited extent. Here, in a 315 MW boilers with fluidized bed combustion of biomass and coal is burned together. Overall, 90% coal and 10 % biomass is burned in the power plant.
