Zernez

Zernez ( [ tsərnɛts ]? / I ) is a municipality in the district Sur Tasna, District Inn of the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland.

The coat of arms is reminiscent of the many bear stories from the forests of the community. At the same time, it also refers to the family Planta, which was for the community of great importance and a bear paw in the arms led.

Geography

Zernez is located in the wide valley of the Engadine at the confluence of the Inn and Spoel. Zernez 1033 has mostly Romansh inhabitants and lies at an altitude of 1,474 m. The place is the most important starting point for hikes in the Swiss National Park. A popular destination is the hiking hut Cluozza hut. To Zernez include the fraction Brail and the hamlet Carolina.

Languages

Despite changing the language of a small minority from the Romanesque to the Germans in the 19th century the majority of the inhabitants of the ancestral language in the form of the idiom Vallader remained faithful. 1880, 84 % 1900 79% 1941 and 78 % of citizens Romansh as their native language. History

Zernez was first mentioned in 1161 as Sarnetz. After a major fire on 5 September 1872 only 40 undamaged left something of 157 houses, became a part of the village in urban style and built with the Engadin otherwise atypical flat roofs again.

Not far north of Zernez is which featured, dating from the 17th and 18th century Castle Wildenberg. In the district Runatsch is an early Baroque parish church of 1609 with rich stucco decorations.
