Shortly before the opening of the Zeta in the Morača located near the river, the ruins of the ancient city of Duklja.

The Principality of Zeta, which is considered as the nucleus of the later state of Montenegro, the river is named. Similarly, a Banovina was named during the time of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia after the river or the former Principality so.
