Zhang Jike

Zhang Jike (Chinese张继 科/张继 科, Pinyin Zhang Jike; born February 16, 1988, Qingdao, China) is a Chinese table tennis player. He is currently the Olympic champion, world champion and World Cup winner in singles. Zhang Jike uses the European shakehand service grip.

Career

Zhang Jike made ​​the jump to the Chinese Youth National Team. In 2004 he was however suspended due to a gambling scandal. In 2006, he returned. In 2008 he was Chinese champion in singles. In the Table Tennis World Championships 2011 in Rotterdam, he won the individual competition. In the final he won against his compatriot Wang Hao. In the same year, he managed to win the World Cup in Paris, his opponent in the final was again Wang Hao. Zhang is the first player in the new millennium and for Jörgen Persson and Liu Guoliang only the third player ever to have won these two major titles in one year.

At the Olympic Games in London in 2012, he won again against Wang Hao, the gold medal in the individual competition. In the semifinals, he had prevailed against Dimitrij Ovtcharov. Even with the team he was after a 3-0 final win against South Korea Olympic champion. In the semifinals, he lost his singles match against Timo Boll. In the final of the World Cup in 2013, there was a renewed battle with Wang Hao. With a 4-2 victory Zhang Jike also retained the upper hand this time, and thus defended his title.
