Zhanjiang
Zhanjiang (湛江 市) is a prefecture -level city in the Chinese province of Guangdong. It is located southwest of the provincial capital of Guangzhou to the coast of the South China Sea in the Leizhou Peninsula.
Zhanjiang is today with 6,070,702 inhabitants ( census 2000) is the fourth largest city in the southern Chinese province. It has an area of 12,490 km ², which includes the entire peninsula Leizhou and some north of it lying areas. Zhanjiang consists of four municipalities (along 1360 km ² more or less urban settlement area ), three urban districts ( Lianjiang, Leizhou and Wuchuan ) and two circles.
Originally Zhanjiang was a small fishing port. In 1898, French troops occupied the city with the aim to found a commercial establishment. A 99 - year lease contract ( as in the case of the German lease area Jiaozhou Bay and the New Territories of the former British colony of Hong Kong ) came about; it was the French leased territory Kwangtschouwan, which, however, already in 1946 came under Chinese sovereignty after it had been occupied since 1943 by Japanese troops. Only after the Second World War Zhanjiang succeeded in rising into an important port city, which was accelerated by China's economic growth in recent years. Due to the natural conditions favored as a deep water port, the city is now one of the ten busiest ports in the People's Republic. In addition to general cargo and container handling make the oil and gas (offshore), fishing, pearl farming and salt production, the most important economic sectors Zhanjiangs dar.
Administrative Divisions
The prefecture-level city of Zhanjiang is made at the county level from four districts, three urban districts and two counties. These are:
- (1) City District Chikan -赤坎 区Chìkǎn Qū;
- ( 2) the municipality Xiashan -霞山区Xiashan Qū;
- (3) City District Potou -坡头 区Potou Qū;
- (4) City District Mazhang -麻 章 区Mazhang Qū;
- (5) City Wuchuan -吴川 市Wuchuan Shì;
- (6 ) Lianjiang City -廉江 市Lianjiang Shì;
- (7) City Leizhou -雷州市Leizhou Shì;
- ( 8) Circle Suixi -遂溪 县Suixi Xiàn;
- (9 ) Circular Xuwen -徐闻 县Xuwen Xiàn.
Monuments
The lighthouse of Naozhou Island ( Naozhou Dengta硇 州 灯塔) is since 1996 on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China ( 4-218 ).
