Zheleznogorsk, Kursk Oblast

Zheleznogorsk (Russian Железногорск, transliteration Železnogorsk translated, City of Iron ) is a town in Kursk Oblast in southwestern Russia. It lies in the northern part of the oblast, about 90 km north- west of the regional capital Kursk and on the border of Oryol Oblast. The nearest town is Dmitrovsk in Oryol Oblast, some 20 km north- west of Zheleznogorsk.

With 95 049 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) is Zheleznogorsk to Kursk, the second largest city in the Kursk Oblast.

History

Zheleznogorsk, was founded in the wake of the 1950 Kursk magnetic anomaly started development of one of the largest iron ore deposits in the world. As the birth city is October 2, 1957, as here, the construction of the first working-class district was started. Just three years later was the population of the settlement around 2000 inhabitants, and 1962, when the site officially received the city status, there were already more than 9000th

The place name, received the Zheleznogorsk at its inception, literally means something like " Eisenstadt ", which should emphasize the primary importance of the city for the mining and processing of iron.

Economy and Transport

Zheleznogorsk is one of the leading mining towns of the Kursk region. As the most important companies in the city is the Schelesnogorsker iron mining combine MGOK, which was founded at the same time with the city and today as part of Metallurgy Holding Metalloinvest is one of the leading Russian companies in the iron ore mining and iron industry. There are also a number of smaller factories in Zheleznogorsk, including the packing factory GOTEK, a brickyard, and also food and textile industry.

The main transport links of Zheleznogorsk are the railway line from Orel ( Orel ) to Lgow and the nearby running European route 93 and its known as A142 Russian subsection.
