Province

Zhenjiang (Chinese镇江 市/镇江 市, pinyin Zhenjiang shì ) is a prefecture-level city in the south-western part of Jiangsu Province in the People's Republic of China. It lies on the spot where the Yangtze River crosses the Grand Canal. The administrative area of Zhenjiang has an area of ​​3799 km ² and 3,113,384 inhabitants approximately ( end of 2010).

Administrative Divisions

At county level, Zhenjiang is made up of three districts and three urban districts. These are:

  • Municipality Jingkou (京口 区), 316 km ², 601 671 inhabitants, center, seat of the city government;
  • Municipality Runzhou (润州 区), 132 km ², 296 453 inhabitants;
  • City Dantu District (丹徒 区), 611 km ², 360,000 inhabitants;

To the east of the borough Jingkou there since June 1998, a special economic and technical development zone called Zhenjiang Xinqu (镇江 新区= " Zhenjiang New Area "), which is subject to joint management by the provincial and city government. The " New Zone " is about 82 km ² and has around 80,000 inhabitants. Administratively, it is composed of two road districts and four large municipalities. These are:

History

In the 11th century, the famous Shen Kuo had built a mansion here. Until the early 20th century, Zhenjiang was provincial capital. Then, the seat was moved to the easternmost Nanjing. During the Ming and Qing dynasties Zhenjiang was an important trading center. Zhenjiang is the birthplace of Li Lanqing. Tourist inter alia the Jinshan Temple of importance.
