Zhirnovsk

Schirnowsk (Russian Жирновск ) is a town with 16,872 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Volgograd Oblast in southern Russia.

Location

Schirnowsk is located in the north of Volgograd Oblast, approximately 320 kilometers north of the regional center of Volgograd and about 170 kilometers southwest of the city of Saratov. The nearest town is Kalininsk; this is located in the neighboring Saratov Oblast, located about 70 km north of Schirnowsk. In the vicinity of the river Schirnowsk Medveditsa, which flows into the Don flows.

History

The city Schirnowsk went in the 1950s from the former villages Schirnoje ( Жирное ) and Kurakino ( Куракино ) shows that both existed since the 17th or 18th century. After the end of the 1940s in the vicinity of the villages of oil deposits were discovered and developed, Schirnowsk was built in 1954 as a workers' settlement.
