Zhiuli Shartava

Schiuli Shartava (Georgian ჟიული შარტავა; Russian Жиули Калистратович Шартава; born March 7, 1944 in Sukhumi, USSR, † September 27, 1993 same place ) was a Georgian politician.

Life and career

Schiuli Shartava was born in 1944 in Sukhumi, Abkhaz, which was then still part of the Soviet Union. He originally studied engineering and became involved after the disintegration of the USSR in the politics of belonging to Georgia Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia. Large parts of the Abkhaz population targeted but after independence. 1992 Shartava was elected to the Parliament of Georgia. In July 1993 he was also Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia. The Abkhaz independence fighter won but increasingly the upper hand in the region.

Shartava was murdered in the massacre of Sukhumi on 27 September 1993 by Abkhaz separatists. His body was finally handed over to Georgia and was buried in Senaki.
