Zhmerynka

Schmerynka (Ukrainian Жмеринка; Zhmerinka Russian, Polish Żmerynka ) is a city in western Ukraine. It lies in the Vinnytsia Oblast and with more than 36,000 inhabitants, the administrative center of Rajons Schmerynka. Since 1903 Schmerynka has official city rights, has since evolved because of its location at a railway junction, an important transportation center in the region and is the second largest city after Vinnytsia Oblast her.

The present city was built in the 18th century and developed rapidly after the construction of several railways in the 19th century, which had its hub here. 1903 it town was then already awarded. She was then in the Russian Empire in the government of Podolia and was then in the Soviet Union to the Ukrainian SSR. During the Second World War the town was occupied by Romania and affiliated under the name Şmerinca to Transnistria. Since 1991, the city is a part of today's Ukraine.

Demographics

Since the end of the Soviet Union Schmerynka, like many small towns in Ukraine, recorded a sharp decline in population. Compared to 1989, the population went back to 2009 by 12%.
