Zhovkva Raion

The Rajon Schowka (Ukrainian Жовківський район / rayon Schowkiwskyj; Russian Жолковский район / Scholkowski raion ) is a Ukrainian raion or a district with 109 173 inhabitants. It lies on the border with Poland in the northwest of Lviv Oblast, and includes three cities, two settlements of urban type and 160 villages. The Rajon has an area of ​​1295 km ².

The Rajon Zhovkva has 165 cities, towns and villages, the largest number of inhabited places in the whole Ukraine.

History

The Rajon was made in 1940 after the occupation of eastern Poland by the Soviet Union, today Rajonsgebiet was initially divided among the 3 Rajone Velyki Mosty, Kulykiw and Schowka. After the dissolution of Rajone Velyki Mosty Kulykiw and in 1959 the boundaries of the Rajons been extended to today. Between 1951 and 1991, the Rajon bore the name Rajon Nesterov analogous to the name of the Rajonshauptstadt Nesterov was called.

Geography

The Rajon located in the northwestern part of Lviv Oblast, and is bordered to the west by Poland, on the north by Rajon Sokal (Ukraine ), to the east by Rajon Kamianka - Buska, in the southwest on the Rajon Pustomyty, to the south by Lviv and to the southeast by the Rajon Yavoriv. As the crow flies, measured from the center Schowkas, Lviv is about 24 km away, Kiev, there are about 468 km and about 318 km Warsaw.
