Ziggy Elman

Ziggy Elman ( born May 26, 1914 in Philadelphia, † 26 June 1968 in Los Angeles, actually Harry Aaron Finkelman ) was an American jazz trumpeter, trombonist, clarinetist, saxophonist and bandleader. He played with Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey.

Life and work

Ziggy Elman first played various instruments (mostly trombone), after the family had moved there in 1918 in local bands in Atlantic City, where he grew up. Elman played first in his high school and then got his first professional job at Alec Barthas band to perform at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City. There was attentive Benny Goodman on Elman and overtook him in 1930 in his band.
