Ziguinchor

Ziguinchor ( zigɛʃɔʀ ) is the largest city in the same region of Ziguinchor in Casamance, the southern part of Senegal, and has approximately 230,000 inhabitants ( 2007).
It is the commercial center of the Casamance and important trading center between Gambia and Guinea- Bissau. Since 1904 Ziguinchor is the capital of the Casamance. In the early 1950s there was close to the then small town pier with a few buildings. This plant - from a port you could hardly speak - but was started a short time later, inter alia by various German cargo ships. These included ships of the company Gehrckens, Bastian, Flensburg ship division association, Nordic shipping company, Kiel and others. Was deleted cargo with its own dishes, loaded peanuts in bags that individually the workers carried on planks and a loading dock into the Hatches. The pier installations was before their extension so short that the ship fore and aft mooring line had to mangrove trees.
Years later, after expansion of the port and infrastructure, a ferry service was established. The sunken ferry Le Joola ran between Dakar and Ziguinchor. Nearest large neighboring town is the 30- km to the north Bignona. Between these two cities, the language border between Wolof and Diola runs.
Ziguinchor was visited in 1992 by Pope John Paul II and forms the Christian center of Senegal.
Surrounded is the region to the west and north of mangrove swamps and therefore offers a very diverse nature. Ziguinchor is a military base and connected by a civilian airport with Dakar and other major cities in the region.
West of the city, going down to the Atlantic marsh and river scenery out the different tribes, more than 30 languages and traditions hide.
To the west of Ziguinchor is the located on the Atlantic coast resort Cap Skirring.
