Zilia

Zilia is a municipality with 279 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Haute- Corse on the French island of Corsica.

Geography

Zilia is in the northwest of Corsica at a height of 360 meters above sea level in a valley at the foot of the mountain Monte Grosso. The community is located 49 kilometers south-west of Bastia, the seat of the prefecture of the department and 4 kilometers northwest of the Regional Natural Park of Corsica. The municipality has an area of ​​14.01 square kilometers. The mountain village is passed by the Territory road D151 as a thoroughfare. The hamlet and the lieu- dit Ghiarghia (, location, which is called ... ') Poffiume belong to the community.

History

During the period of occupation by Rome there was a place called podium Fluminis with about 800 inhabitants in the lieu- dit Poffiume today. The residents migrated to Zilia and Ghiarghia and panel Fluminis disappeared almost completely.

1509, the Convention of Alzipratu was founded. In the 17th century it was inhabited by 20 monks. However, in the 18th century it served as the basis of the military in the Revolutionary War, so the system in 1732 has been fixed. The French troops used the base to 1752, they left the island. 1755, when Pascal Paoli took over the government of Corsica, the buildings were used by Corsican units. After the union of Corsica with France in 1768, the monks returned and remained until the French Revolution ( 1789-1799 ).

Culture and sights

The Chapel of Saint -François is in lieu- dit Poffiume. In the chapel is a statue from the 17th century, which was classified in 1976 as a monument historique ( historic monument ').

The Baroque parish church of Saint -Roch is dedicated to St. Roch. There are several classified as a monument historique objects in it. This includes a group of sculptures from the 18th century, a painting from the 17th century, the high altar from the 18th century and the organ, which was built in 1831 by Anthony Joseph Saladini. The organ was restored in 1995.

The north wing of the monastic buildings of Alzipratu is obtained. In the refectory there are murals. The monastery church is forfeited and the cloister is gone. The buildings were in 1966 registered in the supplementary list of Monuments historiques. The Couvent d' Alzipratu is now in private ownership.

From the Chapel of San Lussoriu from the 10th century only the apse is preserved.

Economy

Zilia is known for its vineyards, especially for the red wine from the Domaine d' Alzipratu. Since 1995, spring water from Zilia is marketed as bottled water under the name Zilia on all Corsica. Another source, the source of Dirza, produced until 1914 table water. Your water is radioactive and it was thought at that time especially for digestive and diuretic.
