Zinc (II) hydride is an inorganic chemical compound consisting of the group of the hydrides.

Production and representation

Zinc (II) anhydride can be obtained by reaction of zinc (II) iodide, zinc dimethyl or with lithium aluminum hydride in ether at low temperatures.

Properties

Zinc ( II) hydride is a white solid which reacts with water or humidity with release of hydrogen. In a vacuum, it decomposes from 90 ° C into its elements. On contact with acids and bases it decomposes rapidly. Since the valence shell of zinc is not fully occupied, the molecules via hydrogen bonds store together to form a polymer. One speaks of a covalent polymeric hydride.
