Sinkiv (Ukrainian Зіньків; Russian Зеньков / Senkov, Polish Zieńków ) is a city in central Ukraine Poltava Oblast on the banks of the river Taschan. It is the administrative seat of the homonymous Rajons. The town also includes the villages Syweryniwka include ( Сиверинівка ) Dubiwka ( Дубівка ) Pylypenky ( Пилипенки ) Hussaky ( Гусаки ) and Chmariwka ( Хмарівка ).

History

The village was first mentioned in 1604, when this area was part of the Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth. During this time, a fort was built in Sinkiv. As of 1648, the place was in the wake of Cossack independence struggle part of the Poltava regiment, but came from the late 17th century the Russian Empire. 1781 were awarded Sinkiv city rights and crests. 1783 lived in the village of 7,212 inhabitants, including 3,596 men and 3,616 women. From 1796 Sinkiv belonged to small Russian province, in 1802 it became part of the province of Poltava.

In the first half of the 19th century, the population increased rapidly. Lived in 1805 still 6,707 residents in the city, so there were already 9,810 in 1862, including 5,117 men and 4,693 women. Then the people went to 1891 to 9,377 inhabitants, of whom 4,590 men and 4,787 women back, the Jews share was 9.4 %. But until 1897 the population rose again to 10,443 inhabitants. Among the Ukrainians presented with 85.8 %, the largest ethnic population. Other large groups were Jews (12.1%) and Russians ( 1.8%). 1912 boys and 1915 girls' high school was opened in 1920 an industrial- technical school.

In the 20th century stagnated the growth of the city, which is partly due to the human losses caused by the Russian Civil War, the famine and the Second World War. However, one also has played a role that the city has only a narrow gauge railway connection. 1970 decreed the place on a dairy, a vegetable canning factory and two furniture factories.

After 1970 in the town of 12,300 inhabitants lived, the figure dropped to 1979 to 10,210. In the 1980s, the number could increase to 1989 something back to 11 244 inhabitants. Thus, the number was only slightly above that of 1897. Since then, the population has declined slightly during the transition crisis.

Economy and Transport

The economic focus of the city lies on the food industry. Sinkiv is located on the territorial road T -1706, which connects with Hadjatsch Poltava. The city is connected with only a narrow gauge railway in the railway network, through which it is connected with Ochtyrka.
