The nuclear power plant Zion was the third system with twin - reactor by the then Commonwealth Edison. It provided electricity for Chicago and the northern district of Illinois. The station is located at the extreme eastern part of the city of Zion, Lake County (Illinois ). This is about 64 km as the crow north of Chicago and about 68 km south of Milwaukee.

The plant was shut down in February 1998, but the company was in February 1997 set. At that time, an operator had accidentally switched off the reactor 1 and then tried it without the necessary procedures to start up again. 2, the reactor was turned off at the time for replacement of the fuel rods.

It is planned to dismantle the plant in 2010, it is currently mothballed. The fuel (more than 1100 tons ) has been removed and is located on site in a cooling pond. (2007)
