Zirconium (IV ) chloride is a chloride of zirconium. It is a white powder which is rapidly hydrolyzed in air. It is an important compound for the manufacture of zirconium, and other zirconium compounds.
Production and representation
Zirconium (IV ) chloride can be recovered by Carbochlorieren zirconia. The zirconium oxide is converted to coke in an electric arc to Zirconiumcarbonitrid ( carbon and nitrogen -containing zirconium ) and then with chlorine to zirconium ( IV) chloride.
Also possible is the preparation by chlorination of zirconium with chlorine at 650 ° C or with lead (II ) chloride at 500 ° C.
Properties
Physical Properties
Zirconium (IV ) chloride has a polymer structure such as hafnium (IV ) chloride HfCl4. Its standard enthalpy of formation is -980.52 kJ / mol, its molar Standardentropie 181.41 JK - 1 mol -1 and its heat capacity JK - 1mol 125.38 -1.
Use
Zirconium (IV ) chloride is used:
- For the production of zirconium compounds such as zirconyl chloride and zirconium ZrOCl2 - organic complex compounds
- As the catalyst in Friedel- Crafts reactions and polymerization reactions of olefins and epoxides.
- As an intermediate in the production of metal zirconium by the Kroll process
