The Ziz, Wadi Ziz Ziz or Nahr (Arabic واد زيز, DMG Wad Ziz or نهر زيز, Nahr Ziz, French Oued Ziz, Tamazight ⵣ ⵉ ⵣ, Ziz ) is a river in the east of Morocco ( Meknes -Tafilalet region ), whose water mostly southeast of Rissani passes (sometimes even before ) seeps into the desert sand and thus only very rarely to the neighboring Algeria ( Bechar ).

Geography

The theoretical 282 km long Oued Ziz lies in the eastern High Atlas in Morocco and flows southeast into the Sahara. The Ziz flows through scenic gorges ( Gorges du Ziz ) whose bottom is lined with Dattelpalmenoasen, and watered the largely flat landscape oasis of Tafilalet (also Tafilet or Tafilalet ).

Places

Important places on Ziz are Errachidia (formerly Ksar es Souk ), Erfoud, Rissani and Merzouga. The historical trade and caravan city Sijilmassa was once also the Oued Ziz.

Reservoir

South of the Atlas Mountains, the waters of the Oued Ziz in Errachidia in operation in 1971 commissioned Hassan Adachil Dam ( Barrage Hassan Adakhil ) is jammed. The reservoir is not used for energy production but also ensures the supply of drinking water and preventing floods and associated soil erosion for rare but severe heavy rainfall.
