Zlatibor District

Zlatibor ( Златиборски округ or Zlatiborski okrug ) is an administrative district ( Okrug ) of Serbia. It extends across the western part of the country and is 6140 km ², the largest area of ​​all Serbian districts.

The district has, according to the 2002 census, a population of 335 826, its main administrative center is the city of Užice. It is named after the nearby its center up to 1496 m high Zlatibor.

It consists of the following municipalities ( opstine ):

  • Čajetina
  • Arilje
  • Nova Varos
  • Prijepolje
  • Sjenica
  • Priboj

One of the oldest monuments of this region is the White Church ( Bela Crkva ) in Karan, built in the years 1340-1342 There are two more churches in Užice, both ancient and interesting. Sv. Marko church ( completed in 1828) and the Church of the Holy Great Martyr George (built 1842-1844 ).

In the vicinity of Bajina Basta the Raca Monastery is from the 13th century. In its long history of this monastery was several times almost completely destroyed and rebuilt, the last time in 1943 when Raca was burned down by the Bulgarian army. After the Second World War but it was renovated again and stands as a symbol of Serbian culture and resistance.

The Monastery of Miloševo, around Prijepolje was built in the years 1218 to 1219 and was originally a foundation of King Stefan Vladislav, son of Stefan Radoslav. Over 100 compositions, frescoes and fragments were preserved. The most famous among them is the fresco " White Angel ", now displayed in many books, monographs and Internet presentations.

The best-known organizations active in this district are the copper and aluminum mines in Sevojno, the metal group Prvi Partisan, the textile manufacturer Froteks and the dress maker Kadinjača. In Priboj further is the car factory FAP, were among their trucks and buses before the war to be the best in the world, and the FAP - FAMOS, which manufactures passenger cars.
