Zmiiv

Smijiw (Ukrainian Зміїв; Russian Змиёв / Smiow ) is a city in eastern Ukraine and the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons in the Kharkiv Oblast with 14,700 inhabitants ( 2013).

From 1976 to 1990, the city was called Gottwald (Ukrainian Готвальд ) for the Czechoslovak communist politician Klement Gottwald.

Geography

Smijiw is located on the banks of the Seversky Donets, 40 km southeast of Oblastzentrums Kharkiv.

History

Was founded the place in 1606. During the following centuries, the town was destroyed several times by Tatars. In 1797 Smijiw received the status of a city. In the 19th century the city was the administrative center of Ujesd Smijiwk in the government of Kharkov and 1923 the city was Rajonzentrum of the newly founded Rajons Smijiw. On October 22, 1941, the city was occupied by the Wehrmacht. On 22 December 1948, the city state of Smijiw was renewed.
