Zəngilan ( kyrillischschriftliches Azerbaijani and Russian Зенгилан / Zengilan, Armenian Kovsakan ) is a city in Azerbaijan. It is the capital of the district Zəngilan, but is staffed and managed by the internationally unrecognized Republic of Nagorno Karabakh. The city had 2005 376 inhabitants according to the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

History

The city was a small settlement until 1957, when it was converted into a city. 1967 was a further expansion and people from other parts of the country settled in the city. In 1993, the city and the district was occupied by the Armenian army and since then managed by the internationally unrecognized Republic of Nagorno Karabakh.

Culture and economy

In the city there is a historical museum, a small mosque and a war memorial. The cigarette factories in the city make up a large part of the industry.
