Zoarces

Zoarces viviparus

Zoarces is a genus of fish from the family of eelpout ( Zoarcidae ) in the partial order of Aalmutterverwandten ( Zoarcales ). There are ground-dwelling marine fish, which are also found in the northeastern Atlantic, including the North Sea and Baltic Sea side with four species in the Pacific Northwest and with Zoarces americanus in the northwest and with Zoarces viviparus. They live close to the bank to the outer shelf.

Features

Zoarces species are 20 to 110 cm in length have an eel-like elongated body with 101-146 vertebrae. Dorsal, anal and caudal fins have grown together to form a continuous Flossensaum. The caudal fin is supported from 9 to 11 fin rays, and a single Epuralia. In the dorsal fin there are sharp spikes. The eyes are surrounded by a semicircle 5-6 Suborbitalknochen. Is a pore between the eyes.
