Zofka Kveder

Zofka Kveder, also Kveder - Jelovšek, pseudonym Dimitrije Gvozdanovic ( born April 22, 1878 in Ljubljana, Austria - Hungary, † November 21, 1926 in Zagreb, Kingdom of Yugoslavia) was a Slovene writer, translator and women's rights activist and is considered the first major appearance of the Slovenian women's literature.

Life and work

Zofka Kveder "was the first Slovene writer, the outside of the Slovenian literature, namely in Croatian and Czech, came to reputation. "

Coming from broken homes, the autodidact published her first stories in 1898 in the newspapers Slovenka, Edinost, Narod, Ljubljanski zvon and Dom in svet, later, especially in the literary magazine Domaci Prijatelj ( The friend of the family ), the Kveder 1904-1914 edited and used for training literary talent.

Kveder lived for a short time in Trieste, 1900 in Prague, where she wrote for the Prague politics and from Slovenian and Croatian translated. In 1906 she moved to Zagreb / Zagreb and led the weekly supplement of the newspaper woman Agramer daily paper. In 1917 the newspaper was Kveder Zenski sviejet out ( The world of the woman), later Jugoslavenska zena ( Yugoslav woman).

Kveder was since 1903 in his first marriage with the Croatian poet Vladimir Jelovšek and after the divorce in 1914 from the same year in second with publicist and politician Juraj Demetrović married.

Politically, the passionate suffragette Kveder was initially close to socialism, but turned during the 1st World War the Yugoslav nationalism.

In her writings, which were shaped by their own bitter youth, Kveder devoted to combative of emancipation and strove for political, social and cultural education of women. In their time Zagreb Kveder also wrote in Croatian literary language. As an example of their between " an open-minded naturalism and the soulful neo-romanticism " fluctuating work applies J. Cankar.
