Zone Bit Recording

Zone Bit Recording ( ZBR ) is a recording technique in hard drives as well as some historical disk formats (Floppy stations of the CBM series or the C64/C128 ).

It is used to store more sectors on the outer cylinders than on the inside. It also Zone Constant Angular Velocity ( CAV zone or Z -CAV or ZCAV ) is called.

To implement ZBR, a disk controller may have to adjust the read and write rate. The outer cylinder are thereby read faster than the inner ones. That is, the maximum data transfer rate can be achieved only on the outer tracks of the disk.
