Zoo is a file format for compressed data archiving.

The data compression based on the Lempel-Ziv -Welch algorithm ( LZW ). For files in this format, the file name extension. Zoo is planned. The reference implementation was developed in C programming language.

Features

In a zoo archive multiple files can be compressed or uncompressed optional summarized. A special feature of the format allows you to add several " generations " of the same file, which can be managed automatically, but also individually extracted. The files can be commented on individually, are marked as deleted and restored. The maximum file size of both the archived files as well as the archive is 4 GiB. The splitting of large files to multiple archives is not provided. The reference implementation comes with additional, separate tools:

History

The format was developed by Rahul Dhesi, the associated software, first published in the mid-1980s in the Usenet group comp.sources.misc. In 1991, the development was stopped with version 2.1 in favor of other compression programs.

The format had its largest circulation with OpenVMS systems and for a time with the Commodore Amiga.

Availability

The reference implementation has been made available for many Unix-like and DOS operating systems. It is now disclosed in the source code and pass the final version to the public domain. The format is still supported by a number of recent programs like ALZip Pack, WinAce, TUGZip, The Unarchiver, filzip and PowerArchiver as well as the standard tools for the major Linux desktop environments ( File Roller, Ark ). The reference implementation or a decompressor is directly installable from default repositories in most popular Linux distributions.
