The approximately 60,000 speakers of the Zoque variants of Oaxaca and Chiapas call their language o'de Puet. The variants of Soteapan, Texisistepec and Ayapa in the state of Veracruz are known under the derogatory Nahuatl name Popoluca.

Due to the strong geographical isolation within the mountainous area voice, there are widely differing regional variants. SIL International divides the Zoque in eight different languages.
