Zotero

Zotero [ zoʊtɛroʊ ] is a free, open-source tool for collecting, managing, and citing various online and offline sources. It was originally developed as an extension for the Mozilla Firefox Web browser, and is now also in a browser- independent version.

As a reference management software Zotero supports editing of bibliographic information and reading lists, especially in scientific publications.

The software is developed by the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. It sees itself as a modern alternative to traditional, offline publications oriented programs. The name derives from the Albanian word zotëroj (" detect, tackle something quick " ) ago.

Function

Zotero examines the user being viewed websites such as digital libraries, online library catalogs (OPAC ), Google Scholar and Amazon.com to bibliographic information and saves it with a mouse click in a local database. For this purpose, it uses its own parser ( in the translator documentation called ), but also open standards such COinS and unAPI. If it is an online source such as an article or a book, Zotero can create a local copy. Entries in the database can be provided with keywords ( tags), notes, and other metadata.

Zotero is literature lists in different Zitationsstilen and imported and exported various metadata formats, including BibTeX, EndNote, and MODS. The acquisition of data in the text processing can be done either by drag and drop from Zotero into the editor window or a plug -in that is available for each of the programs Microsoft Word and OpenOffice.org Writer and LibreOffice Writer.

Zotero is open for extensions. For example, users and developers citation styles add additional parsers.

Controversies

On 4 June 2009 a lawsuit by Thomson Reuters was rejected, in which had been accused of the Zotero project in the implementation of the format of Reference Management EndNote reverse engineering.

Browser-independent version

On 22 September 2010, the developer Zotero Everywhere announced as an independent, browser - independent program. This program was later renamed Standalone Zotero and published with Zotero 3.0. It allows the use of an independent Firefox version of Zotero with the help of a connector that is installed in the browsers Google Chrome and Safari as an extension.

Version for other operating systems

For some time now the development of Zotero client is progressed for mobile operating systems. Currently, two apps for iOS ( ZotPad, BibUp ) and Android exist ( Zandy, Scanner for Zotero ). For the operating system - independent Zotfile currently a fundraising takes place. It aims to develop a free app for Android.
