Zouhair Yahyaoui

Zouhair Yahyaoui (Arabic زهير يهياوي Zuhair Yahyāwī; * to December 8, 1967; † 13 March 2005) was a Tunisian dissident.

Life

Zouhair Yahyaoui studied business administration. As Reporters Without Borders Yahyaoui fought for freedom of expression on the Internet. After Tunisia's President Zine el- Abidine Ben Ali criticized on the website TUNeZINE.com, he was arrested on 4 June 2002 and was subsequently imprisoned 18 months. During his detention, he complained several times about poor prison conditions.

For his work he was awarded the Cyber- Freedom Prize.

Yahyaoui died on 13 March 2005 at the age of 37 of heart disease.

A year after the revolution in Tunisia 2010/2011 was celebrated in honor Yahyaouis the first time the national day of Internet freedom. The Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki transition praised the work of dissidents during a ceremony on 13 March 2012.
