Zrmanja

The Zrmanja is a karst river in the south of Croatia. It rises in the area of southern Velebit mountain range and has a length of 69 km. A few kilometers after the town of Obrovac it flows into the Adriatic Sea. The Zrmanja flows through a karst area. Under particular physical and chemical conditions, the nature always creates new rock in the area of plant remains (see Plitvice Lakes ). Typical of the Zrmanja as well as for other karst rivers is its clear, emerald green shimmering water.

About 4 km as the crow northwest of Kastel Žegarski flows add the Krupa. A few miles down the river, there is a reservoir that feeds a hydroelectric power plant. Below this dam water level and flow can fluctuate considerably.

The Zrmanja above the dam is a popular destination for rafting and canoeing. 300 m northwest of the Zusammenflußes of Krupa and Zrmanja is the Visoki - Buk Waterfall, which represents a high point in canoeing. Below the dam, it can be driven between a waterfall about 1 km above Obrovac and the mouth in the Adriatic Sea with motorboats.
