Community structure

The district is divided into the barely perceptible historical part, the workers' village ' colony ', the new power plant development in the east and the settlement ' Pöplitz ' (about 2 km) to the west.

History

Until the late 19th century lived little more than 200 inhabitants in Heidedorf Zschornewitz. In 1915 began the construction of the power plant, designed by Walter Klingenberg in only about 2 km away from the mining Golpa. At the same time urban garden Werksiedlung ' colony ' was born. 1916 produced eight turbines of 16 MW total of 128 MW. In order for the power plant Zschornewitz was the first large power plant in Germany and at that time also the largest lignite-fired power plant in the world. It supplied Berlin and parts of Saxony with electric current. 1929 two 85- MW turbines were put into operation ( at that time the largest in Europe ). 13 large chimneys dominated for decades the image of the community. In 1945 the plant was partially dismantled as reparations to the Soviet Union. For the remaining work in the village population was employed aged 17 to 70 years. Wind farm

On the south of Zschornewitz located Abraumhalde the open cast mine Gröbern a wind farm is built with 8 plants after the closure of brown coal power plant. The slag heap towers over the area by about 50 meters and to provide good conditions for wind energy.
