Zubin Mehta
Zubin Mehta ( born April 29, 1936 in Bombay (now Mumbai) ) is an Indian conductor who comes from the ethnicity of parsing. The versatile and international artists grew up in a Zoroastrian family of musicians in Central India.
His father Mehli Mehta was a prominent concert violinists, violin teacher and conductor who founded the Bombay Symphony Orchestra and a string quartet.
Life
Mehta, the elder of two sons of a wealthy family, was awarded the first violins and piano lessons at the age of seven years and was familiar with the early European classical music. He visited during the first through fifth year (1942-1946) the private " Campion School " Bombay under the direction of Jesuit priests. His only sporting interest was cricket. In 1947 Zubin joined the St. Mary's High School in Mumbai, where he spent four years later obtained his baccalaureate degree. As a pupil of his father Mehli Mehta, a violin virtuoso, who spent many years in the United States, he conducted 16 years old the first time the symphony orchestra of Bombay. At the request of his parents, he began to study medicine at St. Xavier's College, University of Mumbai. After two semesters, he focused however on music. At 18, he came to Vienna and finished at the Vienna Music Academy trays piano, composition and double bass. When Hans Swarovsky, he completed a conductor training.
In 1958 he won the International Conducting Competition from Liverpool, where he was deputy Kapellmeister. In his mid- twenties he had already the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic, where he is associated today, conducted. In the U.S., he finished the competition in Tanglewood / Massachusetts second place. At this time he also became acquainted with the conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Charles Münch, know, the major influence on his future career had. 1960 Zubin Mehta made his debut with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, whose chief he was from 1962 to 1966.
Zubin Mehta was 1962-1978 Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1969, he also became Music Adviser to the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, where in 1977 Principal Conductor and 1981 he was appointed music director for life. In 1978 he became music director of the New York Philharmonic and remained for 13 years until he was replaced by Kurt Masur. Since 1985 he has been principal conductor of the Maggio Musicale in Florence.
As an opera conductor Zubin Mehta worked in Montreal, at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, at the Vienna State Opera, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin, at the Bavarian State Opera at London's Royal Opera House Covent Garden, La Scala in Milan and the opera houses of Montreal, Chicago, Berlin ( German Opera ) and Florence and the Salzburg Festival.
From September 1998 to 2006, Zubin Mehta, music director of the Bavarian State Opera.
Zubin Mehta has conducted four times the New Year's Concert at Vienna's Musikverein, in the years 1990, 1995, 1998 and 2007 and was also invited in 2015 again.
Mehta is married to actress Nancy Kovack since July 19, 1969. From his first marriage with Carmen Lasky two grown children come. His son Mervon Mehta is vice president of the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia.
