Zubtsov

Subzow (Russian Зубцов ) is a town in Tver Oblast (Russia) with 6927 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city lies between the foothills of the heights of Bely and the Smolensk heights about 150 kilometers southwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Tver at the mouth of the right tributary Wasusa into the Volga.

Subzow is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The city lies on the opened on this section 1901 railway Moscow -Riga ( kilometer 217). By Subyow also leads the M9 highway Moscow - Welikije Luki - Latvian border ( more about Rezekne Riga )

History

Subzow was mentioned in chronicles for the first time in 1216 and was from 1247 as one of his border fortresses with the Principality of Tver.

In 1485 the town was connected to the Grand Duchy of Moscow. Between 1605 and 1612 the city was sacked several times of the Polish-Lithuanian troops. The construction of the waterway system of Wyschni Wolotschok at the beginning of the 18th century Subzow was an important trading center.

1776 a city charter was granted. Towards the end of the 19th century, the city is a major trading point line.

During World War II Subzow was occupied on 11 October 1941 by the German Wehrmacht and recaptured on 23 August 1942 by troops of the Western Front of the Red Army in the Rzhev - Sytschowkaer operation.

Culture and sights

In Subzow the Assumption Cathedral stands ( Успенский собор / Uspensky Sobor ) of 1801.

The city has a museum of local history.

Economy

In Subzow there is a machine factory and enterprises in the textile and food industries.
