Zuclopenthixol is a polycyclic organic chemical compound from the group of thioxanthenes. The drug is used for the treatment of psychoses. Zuclopenthixol is a dopamine and serotonin receptor antagonist. As an active ingredient of a drug zuclopenthixol was first brought in 1986 by Lundbeck as Clopixol in the trade.

Approved Areas of application

Zuclopenthixol is approved for the treatment of acute and chronic schizophrenia, mania, psychomotor agitation and aggressive behavior in mental retardation or dementia.

Adverse effects

The following undesirable effects occur most frequently: accommodation, urge, dry mouth, fatigue (up to 80 % at the beginning of treatment), muscle rigidity, parkinsonian syndrome, torticollis, dizziness, seat restlessness, tremor and tongue throat syndrome.

Are frequent loss of appetite, look spasm, nausea, depression, diarrhea, dystonia, vomiting, agitation conduction problems, photosensitivity, rash, headache, menstrual disorders, hives, increased reflexes or nausea.

History

Zuclopenthixol was developed by the Danish company Lundbeck. It is the pure (Z)- isomer (Synonyms: cis- isomer ) of the previously developed by Lundbeck ( EZ ) - isomer (Synonyms: cis, trans- isomers) Clopenthixol, which in 1986 was first placed in the trade. For Germany Lundbeck Clopenthixol licensed to Bayer from. In 2000, Bayer took Clopenthixol ( a mixture of substances ) from the market and replaced it with zuclopenthixol ( a pure substance ).

Trade names and dosage forms

The drug zuclopenthixol is brought in three different salt and ester forms in the trade:

  • Zuclopenthixoldecanoat: a solution for injection for intramuscular depot administration,
  • Zuclopenthixolacetat: a solution for injection for intramuscular acute treatment,
  • Zuclopenthixoldihydrochlorid as tablets and drops for oral ingestion.

All three salt and ester forms are available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland are available but are sold under different trade names: Ciatyl -Z in Germany (Bayer), Cisordinol in Austria ( Lundbeck ) and Clopixol in Switzerland ( Lundbeck ).
