Zue Robertson

Alvin " Zue " Robertson ( born March 7, 18911943 in Watts (Los Angeles ) ) was an American trombonist with the Hot Jazz, who founded the typical style of play in the New Orleans jazz on the trumpet.

Life and work

Robertson first played piano before switching to trombone at age 13. First experiences he gained in circus bands and touring revue such as the Kit Carson Wild West Show. Later he was in New Orleans at the Bands of Manuel Perez, Richard M. Jones and John Robichaux. He led at times the Olympia band and influenced his friend with him in the Kid Ory stylistics. He also played with his own bands in the red light district of Storyville in New Orleans and moved to its closure in 1917 to Chicago; where he worked with Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver (1924 ), WC Handy (with whom he went on tour ), Dave Peyton and other musicians. He can be heard on recordings of Morton's Jazz Band (1923 ) and the Levee Serenaders. Robertson first appeared in 1929 in New York, where he played the organ and piano; In 1932 he moved to Los Angeles.
