History

The first train station was built in 1863-1864 on today's federal court by the architect Jakob Friedrich Wanner. It was a bag station, which could only be reached from the direction of Cham and Knonau. With an additional track triangle, the trains could be turned. When in 1897 the railways were built to Zurich via Thalwil and to Arth - Goldau, the station had to be relocated to the site of today's wedge station. The first station building was dismantled and rebuilt in Zurich Wollishofen again.

Station building

In the years 2001-2004 in the city center was a newly designed station building for some 65 million Swiss francs. The building area is approximately 6500 m². Every day flow against 20,000 people in the triangular railway station, thus one of the ten largest in Switzerland.

The building is from the top down viewed from three office floors, a retail space on track level and one at the city level and the basement used as a storage area. Overall 14 stores are located in the station. Specifically a new passage was built so that the pedestrian can better reach the concourse for the station building. The separate quarters Grafenau and Metalli are now better reach. For the cyclists were built new shelters. The newly created space station serves the buses as a turning place. There are also within the station at certain locations an internet connection via wireless LAN.

With the beginning of dawn the station building is until 23:00 clock illuminated by the light installation by artist James Turrell. Fluorescent tubes were on the southern front glass for mounted, which can produce the colors red, green and blue and resulting mixed colors. Since there can be technical problems with the control of the light elements during long periods of cold, the plant is shut in such situations. For the light installation and architecture of the station received on 19 October 2005 each a " Brunel Award".
