Zuhayr

Zuhayr ibn Abi Sulma (short Zuhair; * 520, † 609) (. Arabic زهير بن أبي سلمى, DMG Zuhair b Abī Sulma ) was an Arab poet of the pre-Islamic period.

He is considered one of the most famous Arab poet of the pre-Islamic period. Zuhairs father, Rabī ʿ a ibn al - Riyah Muzani - who was also a poet - belonged to the tribe of Muzaina. Also Zuhairs eldest son, Ka'b ibn Zuhair, was a poet and created seals for Mohammed.

His works can be found in Hammad ar - Rawiyas anthology Mu'allaqat ( The Broken Attached ), a collection of pre-Islamic poetry. This work has been written by seven poets honored with golden letters hung on the walls of the Kaaba in Mecca. He was favorite poet of the Caliph Umar ibn al - Khattab.

Zuhairs poetry was, among other things with the termination of a long-standing enmity from two Bedouin tribes. His poems describe assaults and other adventures in the life of the Arab Bedouin. He also created poems in honor of his tribe.
