Zuidplas

Zuidplas is a municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland. It was created on 1 January 2010 through the voluntary merger of the municipalities Moordrecht, Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel and Zevenhuizen - Moerkapelle. The provisional seat of the new municipality is located in two buildings in Nieuwerkerk aan de IJssel. Zuidplas has 40 774 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013).

Districts

Quarters are 's- Gravenweg, Groot Hitland, Hollevoeterbrug, Small Hitland, Kortenoord, Moerkapelle Moordrecht, Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel, Oud Verlaat and Zevenhuizen.

Policy

Because of the fusion community, the early municipal elections took place already on 18 November 2009. In the first elected municipal council nine parties and groups are represented. The most successful are the VVD and CDA with six with five out of 27 seats.

Community name

The name Zuidplas, which refers to the Zuidplaspolder has prevailed over other proposals. So also the name IJssel en rotting, Oosterschieland and similar Zuidplasland have been proposed.
