Zulia Calatayud

Zulia Calatayud ( Zulia Inés Calatayud Torres, born November 9, 1979 in Havana ) is a Cuban former middle distance runner, who specialized in the 800 -meter distance.

In 1995, she began seriously to running on, initially mainly as a sprinter. In 1999 she won a surprise at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg silver, but different at the World Athletics Championships in Seville in the flow. In the 4 x 400 - meter relay, she came with the Cuban team to seventh place. At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000, she was sixth on 800 meters and eighth in the 4 x 400 meters relay at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton, she reached the semi-finals, and the Athletics World Cup in Madrid in 2002, she finished fourth.

After an injury break of one and a half years it was in 2004 Ibero-American champion and eighth at the Olympic Games in Athens. This was followed by her two successful years: In 2005, she won at the World Championships in Helsinki and at the IAAF World Athletics Final in Monaco, at the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games in Cartagena, at the World Final in Stuttgart and at the World Cup in Athens.

At the start of the 2007 season she was again affected by an injury. Nevertheless, she won the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro Bronze 800 m and gold with the Cuban 4-by- 400-meter relay. At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka and at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 she divorced about 800 m from the semi-final; in the season, she came to the seventh or sixth place.

In the last year of performance athletic career she won at the Central American and Caribbean Championships in 2009. At the World Championships in Berlin, she reached the semifinals and finished with the 4 x 400 -meter relay race in eighth place.

Zulia Calatayud is 1,69 m tall and weighs 59 kg. She is the youngest of nine siblings and was trained by Faustino Hernández.
