Zultrax

Zultrax is a Dutch file sharing program for Windows. It supports networks ZEPP and Gnutella.

The program is shareware, but should be unregistered fully functional. It does not contain any adware / spyware.

Zultrax was developed in 2001 by Peter Bartholomeus and is now supported by a group of developers called Zultrax VOF further developed. It is programmed in Borland Delphi, why no 64- bit version of the program is available.

The goal of Zultrax is ease of use (there has both a GUI and a command line) to be combined with encryption and securing of privacy ( to the ZEPP network was developed ).

During installation, the user must agree to a license, after which he freely used the program and pass freely allowed, but may not make any analysis or modifying the Program or the network ( reverse engineering ).

ZEPP network

The developer responsible for the idea of security through obscurity, the ZEPP protocol is not fully disclosed. This is thus a major drawback for the use of this network and this program.

The information to search and file-sharing will be encrypted.

Users who exchange a file should be grouped together, similar to BitTorrent.

Unwanted Users (Big Brother), which only eavesdropping, should be kept away by 2% of the network traffic is useless random misinformation, similar to WinMX. The benefit of this strategy is doubtful. The unwanted users that you look at as a threat and should be excluded, including all non- Zultrax clients. This prevents new clients for this network based on reverse engineering, and represent a further major disadvantage of the benefits of this network dar.

For each file checksums of the content is created similar to eMule, so that files can be also changed when the file name is different for two users.

Any user can act as a proxy in order to prevent direct source-destination links. This is to prevent that a Big Brother offers users a file and can see who is downloading this file, because he sees only a proxy. The same applies to the other direction. This strategy has the inevitable disadvantage that the network is slow, because proxies consume in order to be useful, at least 50 % of the network bandwidth.

The idea behind the network and the program are not new and the implementation is rather poor. Nevertheless hereby is another P2P-Netzwerk/Client on the market that is relatively modern and current problems in terms of security in P2P networks.

Since October 2006 (?) Zultrax is offered in two versions, one free and a Pro version.
