Zulu Kingdom

The Kingdom of Zululand ( in Zulu: Wene wa Zulu ) was a Zulustaat the north of the present province of KwaZulu -Natal in South Africa.

It stretched from the rivers in the south to Pongola Tugela in the North. In the west it was bounded by the Orange Free State, on the east by the Indian Ocean.

Zululand was established in 1820 from the Mthethwa confederation by the union of the Zulu clans under King Shaka. His political existence ended in 1879 with the defeat of the Zulu against the British in the Zulu War. In November 1884, the German travelers August Einwald concluded, on behalf of the merchant Adolf Lüderitz with the King Dinizulu a treaty that Germany should secure a local territorial claim to the Santa Lucia Bay. As part of a settlement with Britain, the claim but was dropped finally in May 1885, when the British relied on a closed back in 1843 treaty with King Phunga.

In 1887 the technically still independent Zululand British protectorate in 1897 and part of the Colony of Natal.
