Zündapp Bella

The Zündapp Bella is a scooter, which the Zündapp -Werke GmbH built from 1953 to 1964 in Nuremberg and Munich. During the entire construction period than 130,000 of these scooters were produced. Formally, the Bella is inspired by the Italian Moto Parilla scooter, the Zündapp wanted to produce under license originally.

Engine and transmission

The one - cylinder two-stroke engine of Bella largely corresponds to the Zündapp motorcycle engine DB 204 engine capacity but initially was only 147 cc. Initially, the engine was started with a kick starter; In 1955 there was an electric starter, which necessitated a battery box on the paneling beneath the handlebars, because now had to fit a second 6- volt battery for the raised to 12 volt power port. Before the battery was housed in a box below the tail light.

The engine is cooled by the wind. To the front fender was formed so that the air is directed through a central tunnel, which restricted the usual rollers trapdoor, to the cylinder. With a few slots behind the seat she got heated up again into the open. It was important to cover these slots not by clothing or luggage.

Was published in 1954, Bella (model R 200 ) with 198 - cc engine and 10 hp, the R 200 is also the most produced Bella type, and the 200 is the most common engine size of all Bella scooter. The last, 1958 published 200 Model R 204 has an engine with slanted vertical cylinder - just like an analog motorcycle model 200S/201S - and 12 hp increased performance.

A 174 cc engine was installed only about 2000 times.

The four-speed draw key transmission comes from the former Zundapp two-stroke motorcycles in this displacement class, but not the left, but connected with a rocker switch on the right side (left is the foot brake ). The force is transmitted to the rear wheel via a current in a closed chain case chain.

Frame and body

All versions of the Zündapp Bella have a bridge tubular frame and the typical scooter full fairing. By way of derogation from the general concept, the relatively large 12 "wheels and a large air scoop in the footwell, which complicates the trapdoor, but the engine enough cool air, are bringing with no fan. Too, the front fender is the flow of cooling air, the heated from the engine cooling air is under the seats forwarded and exits there.

The Bella had from the beginning a rear swing arm with hydraulic shock absorbers. The front wheel was the first models (R 150, R 151 and R 200 ) led to an undamped telescopic forks, which in 1956 replaced by a then-common long arm. This rocker has only one arranged on the left strut, also with hydraulic damping.

The tank Bella is located under the seats and the optionally available dual seat which is folded to the side for refueling. As an alternative to those indicated by the side plates wheel arches with decorative horizontal grooves grille were available that could be folded out as a luggage support. Depending on a flap in the side panels left and right made the carburetor and accessible through a small, covered with a mesh opening in front of the seat the spark plug could be changed.

Some types of Bella- Rollers were suitable with a special sidecar for the sidecar.
